The red and whites overwhelmed a gallant Bloomfield Tigers 20-0 at Cowra’s Sid Kallas Oval on Saturday afternoon, a result largely brought about by Riley’s first-half double and a sensational individual effort by Noel after the interval.

Riley crossed twice in the space of five minutes, using footwork and brute strength to send his team to an early 8-0 advantage.

That was still the score when the teams returned to field after the half-time break, but Noel soon changed that, bursting down the left touchline and beating three would-be tacklers to plant the ball under the sticks.

His skipper, hooker Jamie Underwood, made the most of the easy conversion, and at 14-0 the premiership was as good as secure.

Halfback Jesse Bodium put the cherry on top, scoring in the shadows of the full-time bell to cap a memorable day for the Dragons boys.

Their coach Sean Constable said it has been the culmination of a long journey for a group which had, with few exceptions, started on their Group 10 path together in the under 10s.

“We did it the hard way, losing the major semi and just winning in extra time last week,” the coach explained.

“But today the boys just turned up and didn’t stop.

“It’s all credit to them. They’ve worked hard all year – for a number of years, actually – and they deserve this.”

Tigers coach Steve Morgan was philosophical about a result which, while disappointing, was not a reflection of his side’s attitude or effort.

“The better side won, no question, and they deserve it,” he said.

“But my boys never stopped trying, it just wasn’t their day.

“It’s just football, and there are more important things. They still had a great time playing in a grand final and making us and their parents proud.”

Despite not featuring on the scoresheet there was not a better player on the park than Dragons custodian Joey Annetts, who was justly awarded the man-of-the-match trophy.

He was outstanding with the ball and without, with a try-saving covering tackle on his opposite number Izaak Goulding – who looked certain to score early in the second half – sure to remain in the memories of the Dragons faithful for a long time.

Bodium and Noel were also great for the victors, while Tyrone Lord and Codey Crough never stopped trying and were tireless in defence for the Tigers.
