Winning one nigh on impossible.
Orange CYMS’ mighty under 10s Green boys will now tell you differently.
The green and golds finished the regular season on the edge of the top five before defeating Mudgee, Bloomfield Wildcats and then clubmates CYMS Gold on their way to this year’s grand final, saving their best for last in a thrilling 18-12 decider victory over Bloomfield Tigers at Sid Kallas Oval on Saturday.
CYMS found themselves down 12-6 at the break but managed to produce tries through man of the match Charlie Miller and five-eighth Callum Miskell at the death to sneak past the Tigers, an outstanding young team that took out this year’s minor premiership.
“I’m so proud,” CYMS Green co-coach Ben Davis said.
“To come from fifth, I couldn’t ask for any more from the boys.”
Davis said he was just proud of the boys for making the semi-finals – they edged the sixth-placed Bathurst St Pat’s by just one competition point.
“I didn’t think we’d make the semi-finals, but we knew if we got there we’d do alright,” he added.
Bloomfield started the better of the two sides, little Jock Selwood scoring the first four-pointer of the match before Ravai Tulevu blazed down the right-hand touchline to score the try of the grand final and give the two blues juniors a 12-6 lead, a great start to the decider.
Dylan Jones managed CYMS' only try of the first half and it was in the second period where his side really excelled, starving the Tigers of possession and coming up with two telling scoring plays to take home the title.
Like his CYMS counterparts, Bloomfield coach Shayne Powyer was immensely proud.
The Tigers didn’t deserve to lose, their defence was brilliant.
“That’s football though,” Powyer said.
“They’ve tried their best and they’re a good bunch of kids. I’m really proud of them.
“They were minor premiers. We only had two losses all season. They’re the smallest team out there and as you’ve seen they show plenty of heart.
“It just shows, though, you’ve got to hold the football to win games, and we didn’t do that today."
