Tom Radnedge was one of 34 students from NSW selected to take part in the 2019 Secretary for a Day program.
He said the trip gave him insight into the inner workings of the department.
On day one the year 11 student was matched with Executive Director of Leadership and High Performance Mark Grant, who he said was “a really nice guy”.
I spoke to him about resource allocation, where we’re lacking and where other rural schools are lacking.

Tom met Mr Grant’s directorate and leadership teams and had the chance to offer school feedback from a pupil’s perspective.
“We discussed the education system and my experience in relation to his work,” Tom said.
“I spoke to him about resource allocation, where we’re lacking and where other rural schools are lacking – he was not surprised, but he was understanding.”
The program, an annual part of Education Week activities, is designed to give students an opportunity to experience first-hand how senior managers and executives meet their daily challenges.

This year’s program reflected the Education Week theme: Today’s Schools Creating Tomorrow’s World, which saw Tom’s group pitch their idea to a panel to create more inclusive school communities.
He said tighter creating clubs around the interests of students who are under represented could be the answer.
