The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports that in 2017 there were 4.3 million Australians, or 18.3% of the population with a disability, while approximately 2.7 million carers help people with disability annually.

More than ever before people with disabilities, their families and carers are able to access support to assist them in living life and loving it. However quite often information can be difficult to understand, hard to access or simply not related to the individual situation or issue that is being experienced.

While there are many services that provide assistance, support and other services to people with disabilities, again finding the right people and making contact can be difficult if you are unsure where to look.

IDEAS (Information on Disability and Education Awareness Services) has been active in the disability information space since the mid 1980's and has a long history of supporting people with disability, and helping them make informed decisions about their daily living.

The non-profit body is a powerhouse of ideas to help those with disabilities live full lives the way they want to. Last year alone more than 900,000 people reached out to IDEAS for help and almost 6000 people dropped in for face to face advice at the various IDEAS activities in NSW and Victoria, with visitors focusing their chief concerns on disability support services, community development and their legal rights.

The concept behind IDEAS is that free advice is just a phone call away for people with disabilities, older people, their families and carers. No matter what the problem is, the people at IDEAS are ready to listen and offer independent advice.

More than one million people have visited the IDEAS website for information where you can also register for their bi-monthly newsletter which is available via post, e-mail or audio, and keeps you up-to-date and informed on services, products, workshops, forums and issues relating to disability and aged services.

Besides providing independent and high-quality information, IDEAS also runs workshops and expos with the help of some financial support from government and corporate bodies.

In the past couple of years it has held PossABLE expos that have attracted thousands of people keen to find out how they can benefit from the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) that is being rolled out across Australia.

The thing about independent information is that it is vital to assist in making the best choices and decisions about the sorts of services and support that people require for their individual situation.
