Orange is fortunate to have so many outstanding historical buildings, thanks to the architects and builders of the late 19th century.
Notable buildings include the Court House, the former AJS Bank (now Centrepoint Arcade), Duntryleague and seven other houses built for James Dalton and his family, Wolaroi Mansion (now part of Kinross Wolaroi School), Strathroy in Spring Street, Llanello in Park Street, Yallunga in Byng Street, the former Town Hall and Memorial Hall, the Post Office, and the former Dalton’s Store.
Orange & District Historical Society is delighted to have architectural historian Graham Lupp of Bathurst to speak at its next meeting on Wednesday 11 July about his magnificent book detailing the architectural wonders of the Central West.
The two-volume book was produced for the Bathurst Bicentenary, jointly produced with Bathurst Regional Council.
It is a work of great historical significance and artistic merit.
The book covers many buildings in Central NSW from 1815 to about 1920. Apart from Orange, Dubbo, Cowra, Mudgee, Lithgow and all small towns and villages in between, the architects and builders of the period built as far away as Narromine, Wentworth, Queanbeyan, Maitland, Armidale and down into the Blue Mountains.
In Orange we have architects John and William Hale, James Douglas, Benjamin Backhouse and G A Mansfield, government architect James Barnet as well as local architect William Lamrock in partnership with John Bates.
The book is two volumes, 844 pages, 1172 illustrations and 460,000 words. It took five years full time to write.
Mr Lupp will have copies of the book for sale at the meeting. At $275, this massive work would make a valuable addition to any library or private collection of local history books.
The meeting will take place at 6.30 for 7pm at the Senior Citizens Centre (entry off Woolworths car park). Everyone is welcome.
Entry is $4 for Historical Society members and $6 for non-members. Supper will follow the meeting.
