Orange Wanderers celebrated their maiden win of the 2018 men’s Premier League Hockey season on Saturday afternoon, securing it emphatically by thumping fourth-placed Lithgow Zig Zag 7-2 to taste success for the first time this year.

Connor Morris and Bailey Ferguson both scored braces in the five-goal victory while Logan Dolbel, Caidan Reddan and Luke Skelton found the back of the net as well to complete the rout.
Naturally, Wanderers coach Mark Pengilly was stoked.
“I knew we’d get that first win at some point, after the last few weeks I’d actually started thinking we might take a big side down and we’ll take a lot of confidence from knocking off a quality side like Zig Zag with that kind of margin,” Pengilly said.
“I was actually completely blown away by the margin. You know, I thought we might be able to get a win by one or two, but to have that big of a margin by the end of the game was massive. We’re all pretty excited with it and it’s just going to be great for these guys moving forward too.”
At times the Wanderers have played well in the opening half or the second half of games but haven’t been able to maintain their intensity for a full 70 minutes.
Outside a small period early in the second half when he said his troops fell asleep a little bit, the Orange outfit put it all together and reaped the benefits because of that.
“Everything we’ve spoken about and worked on at training, it really just came together for us [on Saturday],” Pengilly enthused.
“The most pleasing thing for me I think was that Ziggies tried to muscle us off the ball and the boys accepted that, and stood up to it. That’s been one big thing we’ve need to work on this season, so it’s really pleasing to see the boys have learned all their lessons from those games.
“We did start a little bit slowly in the second half but the boys recovered pretty quickly and got back to it. The passing was great too, the boys moved the ball around really well.”
Dolbel kicked things off in the third minute, before Luke Sheppard equalised for Zig Zag in the 14th.
Wanderers have earned leads and been unable to hold them previously this season, so it wouldn’t have been completely erroneous for anyone to suggest that might happen again with Saturday’s round eight clash poised at 1-1.
Wanderers did the opposite though, Ferguson scored his first in the 28th minute and Reddan extended the lead to 3-1 10 minutes after the half-time break.
Ferguson grabbed his second not long after and then Morris scored two in as many minutes to push the Orange side to a 6-1 lead with 13 to go.
Skelton made it 7-1 with nine minutes remaining before Sheppard grabbed his second – a consolation goal – two minutes later.
Morris, Dolbel and Mitch Black were both among the umpires’ picks for man-of-the-match and Pengilly confirmed all three were outstanding, although he added how good he thought the rest of the side was too.
“It was just a really good team effort, you saw that by our players’ player points being shared around with virtually everyone,” he explained.
“Connor (Morris) and Mitch (Black) ended up sharing that award though and I did think they were both very good, but everyone was.”
