Jaxon Mumme has been somewhat of a Mr Fix-It for Tigers coach Dale Hunter this season, playing forward and back – with goal-kicking stints in the middle – wherever he is needed, and doing so with aplomb.
One of the more composed players in the side, Mumme’s skills and linking play have been a big part of the Tigers’ success this year, the side’s on top of the table, and he feels like he’s only getting better.
“It’s good, last year was the first year back in six years and I was definitely warming to it and getting a proper pre-season in has definitely helped a lot,” he said.
“I like to go where the team needs me but I always like playing forward, especially now Baz is there, I like linking up with him.”
The Tigers will be missing that composure on Saturday, however, as Mumme is unavailable for the first home game for the year against Parkes and the chance to bounce back from the first loss of the year to a high-intensity Bushrangers Rebels side.
“Losing is never a good feeling, especially on a significant game like the Byrne-Long Cup, but it gave us an opportunity to reflect on where we are at,” he said.
“We came out completely switched off against the Rebels and we really only started to piece it together late in the fourth quarter.
“For this week the team needs to be on the same page with players knowing their roles and how they'll help the team win. We also need to bring the intensity and physicality we usually bring that was missing last week.
The Tigers couldn’t match the intensity of Rebels last week, and despite controlling most of the ball they couldn’t convert on the scoreboard, with 1.12 on the scoreboard at half-time and just 5.15 at full time.
Mumme said despite missing this week, the new home ground was an exciting prospect for the Tigers after their scheduled debut of the field was pushed back due to conditions of the playing surface.
“It feels like it's been a long time coming and I know all the boys are really keen to get a home game,” he said.
“Moving our home ground to the Waratahs was a great step forward by the club and it will be exciting to finally run out onto that big oval on game day.
“I'm spewing because I'm away this week so I will miss the milestone, but I'm looking forward to getting out there in the coming weeks.”
First bounce in the Tigers’ clash with the Panthers is at 2.30pm at Waratahs Sportsground.
