This will allow further expansion of this wonderful resource, giving increased exhibition space and much-needed proper storage space for both the gallery and museum.
The gallery was built after much council and public debate.
Look at it now: the envy of many regional cities across Australia, with much of the hard work done by voluntary groups such as the gallery trust, the friends of the gallery group and, of course, the generosity of Mary Turner.
TAKING A SPORTING CHANCE
IT was great to see Orange feature again with a major sporting event. The NSW under 14s Rugby Union championships held at Endeavour Oval brought close to a couple of thousand players, family, friends and officials to Orange, many for four days.
Accommodation, restaurants, clubs and hotels were well patronised, bringing millions into the local economy.
A group from Orange is visiting Canberra next week to have a look at the Cricket Centre of Excellence, which is part of the ongoing community involvement in making our centre at Wade Park one of the best.
Swimming Orange (a combined organisation of swim clubs) is well down the organisational track with a recent meeting in Orange with representatives of the city’s swimming community, council and Swimming NSW officials. I am sure that with continued consultation this will be a great step forward.
Volunteers working hard
COMMUNITY organisations such as Vinnies and FoodCare do marvelous and unheralded work to support people who may be struggling. I would like to highlight the work of FoodCare, that operates out of the Glenroi Community Centre two mornings a week. These volunteers provide food to over 100 families in need. A big thank you to all involved.
Recently our local IGA owners and staff commenced providing a hot meal for those in need at the CWA Hall on a Tuesday, and the response has been overwhelming. It’s appreciated by council and the community.
STEM GRAD FOR TEACHERS
LAST weekend we saw the graduation of many school teachers in a STEM program conducted by the University of Sydney. Conducted in Orange, we saw teachers from across Regional NSW interacting with professionals in the area of science, technology, engineering and maths.
RURAL INVESTMENT COMING
LATER this week we are meeting with some of the board and the CEO of The Rural Investment Corporation, which will be located here. Initially this will involve about 30 staff responsible for overseeing over $4 billion in investment funding across Australia, enhancing our reputation as an Agribusiness Hub in Australia.
PEARCE FEATURES AT LECTURE
I attended the VERTO lecture on Friday given by the great rugby league player Wayne Pearce. What a true champion, a contributor to his community and country. One of the most inspirational speakers I have heard.
It was interesting to find out about his degree, teaching experiences and the hardships he faced growing up. He event spent his holidays near Orange at Mumbil.
