Alongside son Knox, Mr Sampson traded his old spot from behind the bar to control the two-up ring on Wednesday.
“Knox was in charge, the players did the tossing, I called it how they fell and tried to stay out of the way,” Mr Sampson said.
The Sampsons owned and ran the pub from 1985 to 2000, during which time Mr Sampson ran the game on April 25 each year.

He said punters don’t bet as big as they once did.
“It’s a game of hanging in there. If you can keep hanging in you’ll win – it just depends on how much you’re prepared to risk losing,” Mr Sampson said.
“If you have the most money you’ll go home a winner because you can outlast everyone.”
Owners Narelle Cochran and her son Ben asked the Sampsons to run the game of heads and tails this year.
“I thought it’d be nice for the families to do this one together,” Mr Cochran said.
He said despite a busy day of service he managed to step outside briefly to test his two-up theory.
“Back heads and bet strong,” Mr Cochran said.
Mr Sampson said there were no big winners or losers on the day, as the coins fell pretty evenly.
