The Veterans’ Cricket Association’s Australian Over 50s cricket carnival is underway in Orange this weekend, with 18 sides from four states – and one from the ACT – have taken to fields around Orange.

Spread over two divisions, Victorians dominated the first two days of division one games, which were 45-overs a side, while one side from each of NSW, Victoria and Queensland shared the spoils in division two.
Victoria Blue sits one point clear on top of the table after their two wins in the opening two games, but it was Saturday’s draw between Queensland Border and Tasmania Thylacines which was the stand-out game.
Both Border and Thylacines finished with their score at 180 after their 45 overs, Border six wickets down with the Tasmanians seven.
Border batted first, with opener Joseph Laffey and number five Andrew Walsh both retiring on 40 and 41 not out respectively, while Bevan Anderson took 2-23 off four overs.
Thylacines started well, racing to 1-100 with the loss of only Claude Orlando for 26, but as Noel Raymond and Michael Claxton retired with 41 and 40 not out respectively the innings fell apart, losing 6-79 before running out of time to pass 180.
Queensland Border were able to overcome NSW Blues in its first game on the back of another Walsh 40, passing Blues’ score of 172 with two wickets to spare.
Thylacines lost to Victoria Blue by the same two-wicket margin in its first game, while ACT Fireballs were too strong for Queensland Burge, scoring a six-wicket win.
Meanwhile, NSW Waratahs defeated Victoria White by three wickets on Friday with just eight deliveries to spare, but went down by seven wickets to Queensland Burge on Saturday.
ACT Fireballs looked to pick up where it left off in their first game, racing to 4-215 from its 45 overs, only to be chased down by Victoria White in a high-scoring affair, Whites reaching 4-219 with three balls remaining in the game.
In Division two, NSW Kangaroos, Victoria Green and Queensland Hayden were all at the top of the table at the end of day two, with Orange local Stu Crisp’s NSW Boomers racking up two close losses.
Crisp top scored and retired on 43 not out in the Boomers’ first game against NSW Sixers, but it wasn’t enough as his side could only make their way to 8-166.
NSW Kangaroos scored 6-286 from 45 overs and held Tassie Devils to just 121 all-out in reply.
Day three on Sunday was a Twenty20 round, where Victoria Blue, Tasmania Thylacines, Queensland Burge and NSW Waratahs all took the spoils in division one, while second division scores weren’t available at time of print.
Finals begin on Monday.
