Hewitt and daughter Rue each have their shot at Group 1 glory in the Gold Crown and Tiara, respectively, and a chance to make the night a family celebration.
College Chapel has been the talk of the carnival in his run towards the Gold Crown for Hewitt while Rue’s filly Hammertime Harley can be right among the action after drawing well for the Gold Tiara.
Rue would love to taste Group 1 glory but seeing her father achieve the feat would be just as sweet.
“Dad has worked hard his whole life. He’s been in the Gold Crown and Tiara a lot of times but hasn’t quite got one. It’s something he’s always wanted to win and I think this year is the best chance he’s ever going to have,” Rue said.
“As long as everything goes to plan and there’s no bad luck he’s a good shot. He’s a very nice horse, his two-year-old.”
Hammertime Harley goes out from gate two in the Tiara final.
The Art Major filly finished second in her heat behind Dennis Picker’s Ally Rogan.
“I picked a better [gate] this year. I picked eight for ‘Queenbee last year,” Rue laughed.
“We thought she was a really smart filly early on when she won her first start but she kind of went off a bit. I think we were being a bit too easy on her and got away from us a bit.
“Going into the heats we were confident that we’d picked her up a lot. We probably just didn’t have her fit enough between her second and third start. We knew she was better than that.
“She’s going out from a good position but she’ll need the help.”
Both Rue and Hewitt have enjoyed recent wins in the three-year-old finals.
Hewitt won the Gold Bracelet in 2015 with Dont Think Twice and Rue’s husband Mat drove Fouroeight to a Gold Chalice triumph the following year.
Gemma Rue now has an excellent opportunity to join her father on the Bracelet winners list with her NSW Oaks finalist Callmequeenbee.
Callmequeenbee fought through tough conditions on Monday and was lucky to qualify after finishing fourth in her heat.
Rue is confident the run won’t be any indication of how the filly will fare in the finale.
“We’re not taking anything away from Monday’s run. It was an upside-down run race. A few things didn’t go her way. She did work early and it was windy,” she said.
“She pulled out early down the back and raced rough on the home turn, so a lot of things didn’t go her way and she still only got beaten by 7m.
“This is the best horse we’ve had in some time in a big race. We’re just as confident with her as we were heading into the Oaks. She’s looking as good as we could have her and we’ve drawn well.”
