Charles Sturt University’s Matt O’Connell is nailing this advice – creating a research project looking for fish in pubs.
This translates to Mr O’Connell being paid to conduct a review of pub-wall mounted Murray cod around the country.
The cheeky scientist isn’t even prepared to do the work himself, calling on pub goers to help him with his ‘spot a cod’ project.
Drinkers are asked to help Mr O’Connell with his work by photographing pub cod and sending in size, previous swimming location and current watering hole location.
Mr O’Connell hopes the project will improve how declining Murray cod are managed.
“The mounted Murray cod is a unique part of Australian culture but unfortunately in recent years the iconic species has been declining and remains under threat,” he said.
“I want to find as many mounts as possible and talk to the people who display these fish and have a strong connection to them, to find out what motivates them to mount and display their fish.”
Mr O’Connell already has leads on nearly 300 mounts scattered across NSW, ACT, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia.
