While some teenagers spent their Christmas holidays on the couch, these sisters were strumming away streetside for causes including a reading program at Bowen Public School.
“We started busking very young and decided early on to give away what we made,” said Ailish, 17.
“Mum always taught us that it was good to give – we’ve never thought about doing it any other way.”
Alanah, 15, said they felt like the real recognition for their fundraising should go to the people of Orange.
“It is really lovely to be recognised with the Young Citizen award, but the real thanks goes to all the people who donated to us. Without their generosity we’ve got nothing to give,” added Ailish.
Ailish said she thinks they’ll be back busking again as a duo in the next summer holidays. The girls raised more than $700 with their instruments this Christmas, setting a tough target to beat.
“It is great to raise the money and it is great getting to play alongside your sister,” said Ailish.
“We get along so well and we have a lot of fun – it’s nice to have someone to whip out your instrument with whenever to have a little jam.”
The two were spending the day catching up with some friends.
