Braving floodwaters, damaging winds and torrential rain, the local SES is all made up of volunteers who brave the elements to help in emergencies.
Orange SES deputy local controller Rob Hines said the SES currently had 26 volunteers “from all walks of life”.
“There are people with full-time work, part-time work, casuals … from 72 years old to 21,” he said.
“We’re an organisation that makes use of any skillset, from people who can use a chainsaw to people with IT skills, our organisation is a jack of all trades.”
Mr Hines said special mention went to Orange area commander Kim Stevens, who was clocking up 49 years with the SES.
“He provides a steady hand on the ship … he has a huge amount of experience and he brings that into the unit,” he said.
Those wanting to join the SES are welcome to apply online at www.ses.nsw.gov.au, or can attend a training session at 260 McLachlan Street, Monday nights at 7pm.
