A car stopped on track, a kangaroo bounding up Mountain Straight and a rock sitting at the entrance to The Esses were the only reasons the safety car moved from pit lane in Sunday’s Great Race for the first 133 laps.
Rick Kelly’s deep run at the Chase began what would be a crazy final hour and a half of racing at Mount Panorama.
The safety car brought many drivers into pit lane and changed up strategies.
On the restart ledaers Shane Van Gisbergen and Garth Tander contacted and ran off the road.
Tander was then caught up in a three-car incident at Hell Corner with Chaz Moster and Cam Waters.
Simona De Silvestro wiped out on Pit Straight, teammates Tander and Moffat both had incidents towards the top of the Mount and on the penultimate lap Mark Winterbottom crashed while in fifth position.
