It was especially significant for retired senior constable Ian Hatswell, who lost a colleague during the Hilton Hotel bombing in 1978, when he was part of the command at Balmain.
“The officer who took my place was killed,” he said.
Retired second-class sergeant Bob Baker said the police force was like family.
“You’re looking after your partner’s back and they’re looking after yours,” he said.
The service was held at St Barnabas Church and acting Canobolas Local Area Commander Peter Atkins said sometimes the outcomes were tragic.
“It’s an opportunity to recognise the sacrifices they’re prepared to make,” he said.
