The roadworks on the Great Western Highway from Hartley Vale to Forty Bends which started in late 2014 are weeks off being completed, according to Roads and Maritime Services.

“Safety improvement work along the Great Western Highway between Hartley Valley and Forty Bends is expected to be complete in coming weeks,” a spokesperson for Roads and Maritime Services said.
“Crews have contended with challenging weather conditions including rain, resulting in a revised opening date.
“Roads and Maritime Services has worked closely with the community to minimise the impact and thanks residents and motorists for their patience while work was carried out.”
Improvements along the existing highway include changes to curves and resurfacing the road to improve safety for motorists, building a new structure across Whites Creek, installing more arrows and reflective markers on the highway and upgrading five main intersections between Hartley Valley and Forty Bends.
In July 2012, the Australian and New South Wales governments announced a $250 million revised investment program for the upgrade of the Great Western Highway between Katoomba and Lithgow, with the upgrade between Forty Bends and Hartley Vale using a significant portion of the funding.
The $100 million upgrade to the section was announced in 2012 and did not proceed without controversy.
The project has had a revised open date due to delays.
