Small business wants to open but not when it is cost-prohibitive

Orange Business Chamber president Mark Madigan said having to pay staff public holiday penalty rates of double time and a half stopped many businesses opening.
“Small business wants to open but not when it is cost-prohibitive,” he said.
Mr Madigan said shops had to trade well to meet the costs of staff wages on public holidays.
He said many could not afford to open or were only operated by the business owner.
Mr Madigan said he believed more would open if the rates were reduced.
Earlier this year the Fair Work Commission ruled in favour of reducing Sunday and public holiday penalty rates in certain industries, however Mr Madigan said it would not be changed for this Easter.
“Everything’s exactly the same,” he said.
Fast food chains will keep normal hours.
