The green and golds have signed former Orange Hawks and Orange City excitement machine Joe Lasagavibau for the 2017 Group 10 premiership, the likeable Fijian to slot into the halves for Mick Sullivan’s outfit this winter.
After landing in Orange and playing rugby league with Orange Hawks in 2011, Lasagavibau crossed codes and played two seasons of rugby union with Orange City in 2015 and 2016.
He helped the Lions to the 2015 Blowes Clothing Cup grand final, eventually going down to Emus at Endeavour Oval.
But a chance to start afresh has led to the 28-year-old linking with CYMS this season – the Lasagavibau name often comically muddled by game-day ground announcers the region wide.
“I’ve been talking to (CYMS life member Matt King) and he asked if I was keen. I said I was and the club has welcomed me with open arms,” Lasagavibau said.
“The boys have been great and I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully I can go one better than the last time I played.”
Lasagavibau linked with the club this week, having already trialed for the Central West Blue Bulls squad against the NSW Gen Blue under 20s at Mudgee in February.
He’s departure from the 15-man game will be a blow to the Lions’ 2017 Blowes Clothing Cup hopes.
But City’s loss is CYMS’ gain.
Lasagavibau is electric in league, helping lift Hawks to the 2013 Group 10 minor premiership where the club fell at the final hurdle against CYMS in a memorable grand final in front of 5000 people at Wade Park.
The Group 10 season kicks off on April 9.
CYMS’ next run will be at the Bathurst Knockout on March 24.
