During a closed meeting, Orange councillors terminated the contract, noting Hibbo Hire did not intend to complete the works under contract on the widening of the channel between Byng Street and McLachlan Street and had removed materials and equipment from the site.
They resolved for subcontractors to complete the widening without further tendering due to the need for emergency works to prevent damage to the environment and private property.
Orange City Council spokesman Nick Redmond said the council was assessing its options in regard to pursuing costs or damages.
He said the project was due to be finished in December and Hibbo Hire left the site in January.
“The project was a widening of 150 metres of the channel,” he said.
“To date approximately 30 metres has been completed.
“As the project is incomplete, council is assessing the impacts of this and any damage that has occurred.”
Hibbo Hire was contacted for comment.
