Officers were called to Chopin Street just after 10.20am after the man allegedly threatened Department of Housing Staff who had come round for repairs, claiming he had a weapon.
When police arrived, the man made similar threats towards officers, before barricading himself inside the home.
A perimeter was set up around the house, with police closing the street to traffic as negotiators attempted to speak to the man.
Specialist tactical police were also called to the scene, with officers using a loudspeaker throughout the day to coax the man out.
Ambulance and fire and rescue crews were also on hand as a precaution.
The man was the only one inside at the time of the siege, despite initial reports suggesting his wife and child were also in the home.
At about 7.45pm, the man walked outside and surrendered to police.
He was then arrested and taken to Westmead Hospital for assessment.
