The first year Bachelor of Pharmacy student was the first recipient of the new scholarship, which was awarded at the CSU scholarship presentation in Orange on Wednesday.
From Nanima Wellington, Miss West had been working at a pharmacy and had already achieved Certificate I, II and III when she decided to undertake the university course to become a pharmacist.
Having had to leave her full-time job and move to Orange during study periods she said the $5000 scholarship will be a great help and will top up what she earns during the holidays and will last through next year.
“It helps buying text books because text books are pretty expensive, the first thing I will get is a little HP lap top to take to class,” she said.
Miss West also gave the thank you speech at the presentation and said as a young Aboriginal woman she felt proud to be able to stand up and give thanks on behalf of the students.
Orange head of campus Heather Robins said 15 scholarships were presented at the ceremony and across all CSU’s campuses just under $1.1 million in scholarships are being awarded, including two new scholarships in Orange.
Along with Miss West’s scholarship, the Carole and Stan Droder Scholarship awarded to Bachelor of Physiotherapy student Blake Smoothy was also a new addition after the couple bequeathed more than $3 million to the CSU Foundation to provide scholarships to residential undergraduate students, with the university matching that amount.
Other scholarship recipients were Bachelor of Physiotherapy students Clare Hoogers - 8EFTS Scholarship, Eden Bradford - Kurrajong Waratah Allied Health Scholarship - Physiotherapy, Emma Egginton - CSU Foundation Scholarship, Christopher Nees - CSUgive Work Placement Scholarship and Jacob Gilliland - CSU Excellence Scholarship.
Bachelor of Pharmacy recipients were Megan Langley - CSU Pharmacy Foundation Malcolm Rosborough Scholarship, Darcy Bonett - Kevin Dickson Memorial Scholarship, Peter Gergs - Pharmaceutical Society of Australia Scholarship.
Bachelor of Ecological Agricultural Systems student Bonnie Wjyman won the Westwood Eco-Agriculture Scholarship.
Bachelor of Dental Science winners were Elizabeth Yee - CSU Foundation Accommodation Scholarship, Stefanie Kenyon - CSU Foundation Scholarship, Janice Dewarn and Lydia Skabar - CSU Excellence Scholarships.
