That’s how Orange product Tim Guy described his victory, via Facebook, in the last stage of the 2016 Tour de Filipinas on Sunday (AEDT) - a marathon 147km stage kicking off in Legazpi City, looping through the surrounding mountains and finishing back in the city.
In one of his first Union Cyclist Internationale races in eight years, Guy’s victory in the fourth and final stage of the event capped off a strong week for his Attaque Team Gusto, which netted the group several podium finishes.
After a number of breaks one of the Orange rider’s Attaque Team Gusto teammates, Guy Kalma, led through the first King of the Mountains (KOM) stage of the race and finished third in the opening sprint as well.
Following the second KOM stage of the race the peloton came back together with around 7km remaining in the race, just prior to Guy making his move.
With around 5km remaining Guy attacked the leaders, found a gap and managed to hold on to eventually secure a comfortable stage win, clocking 3.52.50 and finishing almost 10 seconds in front of second.
In a huge result for Attaque Team Gusto, that second placed rider was Cameron Bayly, giving the team a one-two finish to conclude the event.
“5.5 km from the finish Cameron Bayly tells me ‘if you have got anything left, keep hitting them’, the only person I wanted to hit was him, in the face,” Guy joked on social media following his victory.
“Fortunately I didn’t and had one more swing at the bunch instead. (I) hit them with 5km to go, got a gap and just held on.”
The impressive individual results also gave Attaque Team Gusto top spot in the stage team classification.
