CYMS Moroneys captain Adam Smith said he’s confident of his side capitalising on last weekend’s performance with the ball and scoring their first win of the 2015-16 summer on Saturday, thanks to one very tall, hulking reason.
Cam Thomas.
Thomas returns to the Moroneys’ side on Saturday after a long stint in the club’s top side and Smith said with Orange City on the ropes at 5-60 chasing 120 for victory, he’ll probably throw the 17-year-old the ball immediately.
“Cam Thomas will be vital for us, with a pretty strong bowling attack already he’ll only help us improve,” Smith said.
The big seamer has taken 14 wickets across all forms this season, at an average of 18.4, and Smith said with an all but new ball and several other in-form bowlers to support him he’s confident Thomas can get the job done.
“The ball is only 18 overs old, it’s still in great condition so hopefully Cam, Pom (Jono Cowan) and Gus (Wilson) can do a bit more damage with it,” Smith said.
“Pat Madden bowled exceptionally last weekend as well so hopefully he produces the goods again too.
“We desperately want this win. We’re in a really good position at the moment and we’re confident of capitalising on that.”
Smith conceded his side will need to work hard to take the Warriors’ five remaining wickets, especially considering the greens still have a number of proven batsmen in the sheds.
“We will have to bowl well but Orange City will have to bat well too if they want to get home. I think either way it looks like it’ll be a pretty good, exciting day of cricket at Riawena Oval,” Smith said.
“And it’s Pom’s birthday on Saturday so we’ll have reason to celebrate regardless of the result, but I think we’re $1.04 favourites at the moment.”
“I’m not sure if they’d be that short, but it’s hard to argue with the fact they’re in the box seat,” Orange City batsmen Matt Findlay, one of several still to bat, said.
“It’s a precarious position we’re in, sure, but it’s also a spot we’re confident we can get out of. We’ve got some decent bats in the middle as it is, and some good ones left in the sheds too. All it takes in this type of situation is one decent partnership and you’re away. It’ll be tough, but that’s what two-day cricket is about, winning the grind.”
Moroneys and City resume play at Riawena Oval at 1pm.
