ANNABEL Guthrie made a big move on the second day of the 2015 Orange Eight Day Games, finishing second in three of the four events held on Sunday to move into the overall lead for the Queen of Sport title.
Guthrie was in a tie for third overall after Saturday’s opening day of competition, but claimed second place in Sunday’s ball skills - which replaced the cancelled athletics due to wet conditions at Kinross Wolaroi School - along with the swimming and mystery events, the latter of which was a tough Pinnacle stair climb.
Thanks to her strong results, Guthrie (185) took a seven point lead over Cathy Johnson and Claire Goodall, who were tied for second on 178.
Sarah Williams claimed top prize in the ball skills leg from Guthrie and then Goodall in third. In the swimming, Goodall finished first in front of Guthrie, with Rachel Bailey in third.
Reigning Queen of Sport Nikki Williamson won the Pinnacle stair climb, from Guthrie and Nicki Melino in second and third respectively. In the fourth and final event on Sunday, the canoeing, Leanne Wiggins was the best around Lake Canobolas, with Johnson coming second and Jacki Smith finishing third.
Jackson Leckie (125) maintained a slim lead in the King of Sport standings after Sunday’s events, sitting five points in front of Anthony Ellison (120) and a further 13 in front of Simon Wright and Andrew Marsh, tied for third on 107.
Mitch Christie pipped Leckie for first place in the ball skills, with Marsh coming third, but Leckie took top prize in the swimming. Ellison finished second, while competition debutant Steve Fergus, an Orange Emus star, proved his skills aren’t limited to the rugby field with a dugong-like third finish.
Leckie also won the Pinnacle stair climb, from Ellison and Tim West, while Marsh won the canoeing, with Ellison finishing second from Mick Roberts in third.
On Monday night competitors took to the Bridle Track for the 3.7km run, and also went head-to-head in another mystery event at Clifton Grove’s mud hut.
On Tuesday the field takes to Wentworth Golf Club for the golfing competition - which could make or break several competitors’ campaigns - before a couple of individual and team mystery events.
