KINROSS Wolaroi School’s Phoebe Litchfield capped off a near-perfect week on Thursday when she was named to captain her state at next year’s School Sport Australia Girls’ Cricket Championship in Brisbane.
Litchfield dominated the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association titles at Dubbo, averaging 205 across the carnival to lead her Combined Independent Schools (CIS) side to a second consecutive title.
In five digs Litchfield, who co-captained the CIS side, knocked up four unbeaten half-tons - batters were retired at 50 - as her side scored massive win after massive win to go through the carnival undefeated and claim the title.
“It’s very exciting and as we’ve said to our group it’s unusual to be part of a team that is so strong, particularly at a primary school environment, and we recognise that we were very lucky to have the mix of girls we had,” CIS manager Sharon Johnston said.
“They were very well led by Phoebe and Jess [Davidson], who showed their cricket experience and shared their knowledge and were able to place the field well, keep the talk up, make good bowling choices and share the workload, so it has been a very positive experience.”
After a first round bye Litchfield started the carnival slowly, dismissed for just seven in her side’s 69-run win over Hunter.
Then she kicked into gear, finding form to bang out 50 not out and help her side to a five-wicket win over Sydney West, and followed it with 52 not out in CIS’ 64-run win over North West.
She wasn’t required to bat in an easy 10-wicket win over Riverina, but belted 50 not out in her side’s 72-run win over Sydney North to set up a grand final clash with Polding - a side that included St Mary’s Catholic Primary School’s Willow Smith.
Litchfield promptly bombed another 50 not out as her side made 1-119, and took 3-3 to help CIS bowl Polding out for just 31.
She took another four wickets in the carnival as well, finishing with 7-11 at an average of just 1.57.
Litchfield and her NSWPSSA teammates will be presented with their state caps on the SCG before the second day of Australia’s Test match against the West Indies.
