IF the Orange Tigerettes win Saturday’s Central West AFL Women’s grand final, it will be marked down as one of the greatest underdog triumphs in history, right alongside the Mighty Ducks, Air Bud and Woody Harrelson in Kingpin.
But, unlike the latter there’s no horror-movie landlordesses or rubber prosthetic bowling hands in the Tigerettes’ story, just a bunch of women who love Australian rules and now have the chance to win a grand final.
The Tigerettes take on the 2015 minor premiers Bathurst Bushrangers in the inaugural Central West AFL women’s grand final on Saturday at Country Club Oval and, considering the circumstances, the home side are firm underdogs.
The Tigerettes only had two wins all year, one of which was in last weekend’s preliminary final over Dubbo, and played the Bushrangers four times for four losses this year.
In those four games Orange kicked a combined 3.1 (19), compared with Bathurst’s 34.29 (233).
While he conceded the Bushrangers would be considered morals on Saturday, Orange coach Matt Tabbernor said his side was far more developed since the last time it played Bathurst, adding to even have made the grand final is an achievement.
Make no mistake though, Tabbernor and his troops won’t be happy with just a grand final appearance, they want to win.
“When we put this side together three months ago I don’t think anyone expected us to go this far,” Tabbernor said.
“The difference between us and a side like Bathurst is we don’t have anyone who played junior football. We started from scratch with all the players and their improvement and development has been incredible.”
“We went in quietly confident against Dubbo last weekend, and we’ll do the same against Bathurst. Like I said to the girls after last weekend’s win, Bathurst haven’t been tested so if we can pressure them in the middle and make the contests one-on-ones around the paddock, I think we can make a show of it.
“I think we can win.”
First bounce in the women’s grand final is at 1.30pm.
