A survey of his life’s work, titled The poetry of space: the art of Tim Winters, opens at the Orange Regional Gallery on Friday night and will encompass the theme of both physical and philosophical journeys.
It features more than 120 works, including sculptures, prints, drawings and paintings from when he began painting in 1978 to his latest work.
It also follows Winters’ artistic journey and investigations.
Winters said the idea of travel and journey has always been a big influence on his creative works, but it was only by looking back retrospectively on his career he was able to see the links.
“[The exhibition] is a philosophical and visual journey reflecting my experiences, basically of the land and environment in the places I have been,” he said.
Throughout his career, Winters has travelled around Australia, Japan, France and Scotland.
“When I travel, I try to absorb and immerse myself in the landscape and culture,” he said.
“I rely on my memory and experiences to create my work, rather than copy from photos I have taken.”
Known as one of Australia’s most respected landscape artists and teachers, Winters said he has always had a fascination with the Australian landscape, ever since he arrived in Sydney Harbour and saw the “sparkling water, diamond light” after migrating from England at the age of 16.
The poetry of space: the art of Tim Winters will be opened by former Orange resident Elisabeth Bastian at 6.30pm on Friday.
Winters will provide a floor talk of his exhibition prior to this, at 5.30pm.
He will also host a two-day workshop, Introduction to colour lino-cuts, on June 20 and 21.
All materials will be provided and is limited to 10 participants.
