Sharing classic children’s books with the next generation is another trend; all documented in a study of the 10 most borrowed books in Central West Libraries during Library and Information Week in the categories of adult fiction, adult non-fiction, children’s books and junior fiction.
Orange CityLibrary manager Jan Richards and librarian Sean Brady noted the trends were particularly interesting as some trends signal generational trends in reading.
“It looks like readers love crime stories, which made up most of the top 10 [for adult fiction], but they also had a taste for literature and romance,” Ms Richards said.
“It is interesting to note findings of a nationwide library survey by the Australian Library and Information Association also found a crime author, Lee Childs, was the most popular author in Adult Fiction and Jamie Oliver’s cookbooks the most popular in the Non-Fiction section.”
Mr Brady said the study’s results would enhance the Library’s services to ratepayers from the community centre.
“This helps us to build to an overall picture,” he said.
“In non-fiction, research points us to what’s being studied and what aspects of lifestyle are deemed important. It also helps us to especially build the non-fiction collection towards what’s being studied at school, what’s being studied at the university and at TAFE.”
