That is just a convenient excuse to cut services. It may be a capital city problem, however we have abundant dump sites close to Orange.
Many Orange residents have already realised Kinross State Forest is an ideal site for disposal of bulky goods and normal household rubbish. This will surely become more popular as council goes ahead and cuts services for the city households and businesses.
Hiding a rubbish dump in the middle of a forest makes a lot of sense really. It removes many of the usual objections raised by immediate neighbours.
Also the location is below the water catchment area for Orange. Why is council so slow to catch on? Mullion forest has similar attributes.
Then there is the abandoned hole at Cadia that could accommodate our waste for decades to come.
We could even take landfill from other centres and actually earn some money instead of just spending.
First we are told it is a landfill and environmental problem. Then we are told that JR Richards would increase the costs to council to continue the current garbage collection services.
What is the real reason behind this reduction in services that will not result in a saving to ratepayers?
A further real saving for ratepayers could come from council not having to employ so many spokesmen and spin doctors to do convenient surveys and convince us how we will be so much better off from council cutting back services.
Seriously, council needs to look at local solutions.
