Sitting atop the Orange District Cricket Association Limited Overs Cup table, the students were praying for circumstances to go their way, or for it to rain.
They got the latter and as a result qualify for their first final - Royal Hotel Cup aside - since entering the ODCA’s top grade in 2007-08.
Kinross, who had the bye, sat seven points in front of Orange City and CYMS before Saturday’s rained-out matches and eight points in front of Cavaliers. With the two latter sides playing each other and Orange City playing Centrals, Kinross would have been overtaken by either CYMS or Cavaliers and Orange City had those sides won.
“It all sort of fell in place for us really,” Kinross skipper Charlie Litchfield said.
“But we’ve been playing some pretty good cricket in the 50-over stuff, and this is our sixth season and we’ve finally got to a Saturday final so it’s really exciting for everyone to get there.”
Kinross will take on CYMS in the final after they qualified second thanks to a better run rate than Orange City - the two sides finished on equal points.
The students don’t have a good record against the green and golds, with just one win over CYMS since entering the competition - a four-run win in 2011-12. CYMS currently enjoy an eight-match unbeaten streak against the students.
“I remember that win too, it was also the first two-day game we’d ever won,” Litchfield said.
“We’ll ignore that though I think, we’ve got a very different team now. We pushed CYMS last time before we got washed out. We rolled them for 150-odd.
“We’re confident, we’ll get our full side back now with school coming back this week. I think bowling for us will be crucial again, but we’ll have a crack and see how we go.”
