The figures, sadly, speak for themselves.
In the past decade, 60 children under five have drowned in a NSW swimming pool. Seventy children in the past 10 years have suffered neurological damage due to nearly drowning in a backyard pool. One thousand children have been admitted to hospital for precisely the same reason.
So many families are being affected and every drowning is an absolute tragedy. Obviously so many people are impacted.
That’s precisely why readers need to know laws around backyard swimming pools and spas are changing.
Put simply, whether you are selling, buying or leasing a property with a pool or spa, you must have a certificate of compliance. From April 29, 2015 it will be the law. We urge people - for safety’s sake - to get ready.
When you look at the statistics, it's no wonder things are changing ... we must protect children.
Readers can find out more by contacting their local council or you can download a free fact sheet from www.bepoolsafe.com.au.
Royal Life Saving New South Wales wants people to always enjoy aquatic environments. Nevertheless, safety has to be paramount.
