Facing a 48-run first innings deficit after the strong Wanderers 11 routed the red and blacks for 70 on day one, Centrals fought back to bowl their opposition out for 119 in last Saturday’s second innings before a quickfire 45 from George Olsen sparked an unlikely come-from-behind victory.
Set to cruise to the 168 run target, Centrals collapsed as Wanderers quick Nick Sharp nabbed 5-18 to keep his side in the contest and wither the run chase to 9-163 near the close of play.
But ultimately an injured Ben Sandford (26 not out) and young-gun Zac Reimer (0no) defiantly got their side home, Sandford hitting the winning runs with a boundary through point to keep Centrals unbeaten in the ODCA’s second grade premiership.
Centrals skipper Matt Tedeschi’s 4-15 and Barney Davis’ first innings haul of 4-23 kept the red and blacks in the hunt, while Sharp was the best player from either side, nailing 47 in the second innings to go along with match figures of 6-27 in a man-of-the-match performance for Wanderers.
CYMS, too, continue to press its claims for second grade favouritism thanks to a six-wicket win over Kinross.
The green and golds won the toss and fielded at Country Club Oval, bowling the students out for 149 before Todd Murphy (74) and Sam Cooper (72) plundered CYMS to 9-289 to wrap up the victory and head towards a massive outright only for Kinross to defy the carnage and steady last weekend.
Orange City’s clash with Cavaliers reached a stalemate last Saturday as well, but the Warriors maintained first innings points.
On the back of a first innings ton to Shaun Churchill, Orange City declared 128 runs in front of Cavaliers in search of an outright win but a phenomenal batting performance from Cavs steered them to a declared total of 8-338 off 50 overs.
City ended the day 2-117 and the match was abandoned with City earning eight points and maintaining its unbeaten run in 2014-15.
