Played at Muswellbrook last year, Duntryleague golfer Ben Jonas was the best performed of the Central West team, finishing 18th. The rest of the side failed to fire, all finishing outside the top 40.
However, CWDGA secretary Peter Mitchell said with the 36-hole competition being played in Parkes today and tomorrow the Central West side is odds on to skyrocket up the leaderboard in this year’s event.
“Everyone in the side knows the course very well,” Mitchell said.
“We’ve got several guys who have won the Parkes Open, and Andy Campbell has just won the Bathurst Open which was good preparation. The course should be in pretty good nick.”
The team is dominated once again by Duntryleague golfers, and despite Jonas not playing this weekend, Mitchell is confident they have the right mix of players.
Duntryleague’s Robert Payne, Rob Parfett, Wayne Carpenter and Andy Campbell will be joined by Bathurst’s Jarryd Bird and Dubbo star Patrick Wilson.
“[Bathurst] Paul Bright hasn’t been well unfortunately, so we left him out in favour of Patrick,” Mitchell said.
“But Patrick plays off plus two, so he isn’t a bad replacement.”
Mitchell said Central West wants to improve on last year, full stop.
“We would like to finish a lot higher in the teams event than last year,” Mitchell said.
“That comes from the individual results though. I think we have a few guys in this side that can potentially win the individual competition as well.”
Today’s play at Parkes starts at 12pm, with a shotgun start, and at 7am tomorrow, also via shotgun start.
