Staff at McCarthy’s Pharmacy are shocked and saddened by a brazen theft after a man walked into the pharmacy and stole a collection box from the front counter, which containing hundreds of dollars raised to sponsor a staff member in the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival.
Business manager Peita Whiley, who is part of a team competing in the running festival next month, says she feels for all the customers who contributed to the fund.
“We’ve had the collection tin out for weeks and we were well on our way to getting the $1000 we pledged to enter the festival,” she said.
Mrs Whiley estimates up to $800 was stolen.
Fellow staffer Donna Thornton said she was upset for the loyal customers who contributed and for Ms Whiley.
“We have a husband and wife who come in here every week and put money in. This is just so sad,” she said.
Mrs Whiley said the police had been given footage recorded on the pharmacy’s CCTV system.
“But it was cash and we are not very hopeful we will get any of it back,” she said.
Ms Thornton said she hoped some businesses might come to their aid to help replace the stolen funds.
“Someone out there might be willing to help us out and help with sponsorship,” she said.
In the meantime the staff have organised a bake sale to be held at the pharmacy on August 29.
“We would love people to drop in and buy a cake, or they can donate if they like,” Mrs Whiley said.
McCarthy’s Pharmacy has replaced the donation tin. People wishing to help with sponsorship should call the pharmacy on 6362 1077.
