During a visit to Orange on Wednesday, duty manager for region west two of NSW Fire and Rescue Steve Wright, said the vacancies open up a range of opportunities for people who may be interested in being a retained firefighter.
“There is of course a testing process which people have to go through which involves medical and physical aptitude testing, and all training will be provided,” he said.
Mr Wright said although Orange has a 24/7 fire and rescue service, retained firefighters are an integral part of the fire control and protection system, while they are paid a retainer.
“Sometimes we have two call outs at the same time, and although they are not the immediate response as the crew on duty is, they have an important role,” he said.
Potential applicants must possess a driver’s licence.
Although Orange currently has no female retained firefighters, Mr Wright said applications from women are welcome.
“Other stations do have women at the moment, but not Orange,” he said.
Mr Wright said retained firefighters must fulfil a requirement to attend at least a third of the fire call outs a year.
“There is also an obligation to attend 75 per cent of all drills,” he said.
All retained firefighters are provided with free training and equipment.
You can apply on line by going to NSW Fire and Rescue website or call the Orange Fire Station on 63612205 for more information.
