THE weekend weather forecast predicted clouds and rain - It was only half right.
Orange woke up on Saturday morning to the year's first snow, with reports of it settling on the higher parts of town.
The predictions of a cold, wintery start to the weekend were on the money, with a maximum temperature of just six degrees expected on Saturday.
There should be more rain on Sunday before things start to brighten up early in the new week.
A similar picture of cold winds and soaking rain was painted across parts of Central and Northern NSW on Saturday but Orange was the only town to record snow with temperatures of two degrees.
There were unconfirmed reports that areas near Bathurst might have received a snowflake or two on Saturday morning but localities further east to the Blue Mountains missed out.
As a cold front moves further north, senior meteorologists say the Northern Tablelands could be the next to cop the chill.
"The rain is starting to break up and we'll probably see more a little later today," Neil Fraser from the Bureau of Meteorology says.
"It'll come back again overnight before clearing in the morning.
"The cold air will reach the Northern Tablelands tonight, it'll be cold enough to snow but there may not be much precipitation.
"There's a fair chance of a dusting (of snow) in the high parts of the Northern Tablelands but in the meantime, outside of the Snowy Mountains, Orange is the only place confirmed to have had snow."
Mr Fraser said the cold weather outbreaks in late autumn were common and he expected average temperatures to return across the state by mid-week.
"This is the first real cold outbreak," he said.
"It's as cold as it gets in winter."
