Parents could spend hundreds of dollars a term just for lessons and then there would be the cost of hiring the instrument so Major Saunders decided he would hold free lessons for children whose parents would otherwise struggle to afford it.
“Music is of a proven scientific benefit to learning,” he said.
The Just Brass classes started up about 18 months ago and Major Saunders said he was proud of its success and wanted more students to sign up for term two this year.
“Music can benefit a person’s emotional health and their physical health,” he said.
“It is giving opportunities to kids who wouldn’t have those opportunities.”
Major Saunders said he had noticed students who had arrived were shy and not interested in group activities but after a term were completely different children.
This year Orange Brass Band conductor Matthew Gately is teaching the children.
“He’s a lot better than I am,” Major Saunders said.
The classes are on Monday afternoon from 5pm.
