The carcasses were found at Sulman Park about 7am on Wednesday.
Chifley local area command duty officer Inspector Mark Wall yesterday said the kangaroos were shot between 10pm Tuesday and 7am the next day and police hope someone may have seen a car in the area.
Inspector Wall said the shootings were illegal first and foremost because they were shot in Sulman Park, which is a public area.
It is also illegal to shoot kangaroos without a permit.
“Our main concern is the number of houses in the Mount Panorama precinct. In addition, the park is a public area,” Inspector Wall said.
He said police will continue to investigate the killings and again appealed to anyone who may have seen something to contact Bathurst police.
The shootings come just weeks after Councillor Warren Aubin called for another cull of kangaroos on Mount Panorama.
Cr Aubin said the image of kangaroos bounding onto the circuit during high-profile events – such as last month’s Bathurst 12 Hour – could scare off drivers and teams from future races.
Bathurst Regional Council general manager David Sherley said yesterday he was personally unaware of any similar kangaroo shootings.
“I would certainly say council is concerned about the incident. As soon as it was brought to our attention on Wednesday we immediately contacted the relevant authorities, which included police and National Parks and Wildlife,” Mr Sherley said.
He said council rangers don’t usually patrol the area of Sulman Park simply because there has never been a reason to do so.
“The area is locked up at night and open during the day,” he said.
He said council was concerned about the indiscriminate shooting in a public area and the fact kangaroos had been slaughtered.
“We have a fauna plan for the Mount Panorama precinct base and an action plan to ensure the fauna survives. Clearly this does not fit within our operation,” he said.
