The charges relate to alleged assault on the Central Coast that occurred at around 7:30pm on Thursday, December 12, 2013.
It’s alleged the 22-year-old man was driving a white utility along Griffith Street when he stopped near Mr Wilton and punched him in the head, causing him to fall to the ground.
Witnesses called police and Mr Wilton was taken to Wyong Hospital before being transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.
He remained in hospital until he died on Monday, February 10.
At the time of the incident Mr Wilton and his wife Marlene had left Orange to travel around Australia for two years and enjoy their retirement.
Strike Force Mooneye, comprising officers attached to Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command, was established in December last year to investigate the assault.
On Friday, January 17, the 22-year-old man was arrested in Coonabarabran and charged with cause grievous bodily harm with intent.
He was refused bail and remanded in custody to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday, March 12.
Mr Wilton’s funeral will be held in Orange at St Joseph’s Catholic Church at 11.30am tomorrow.
