He walked through the familiar halls and looked out at the familiar basketball courts and remembered if it was not for his school, his teachers and his friends, he might never have had the courage to follow his dreams.
The 25-year-old was the 2014 Toyota Star Maker winner at this year’s Toyota Country Music Festival in Tamworth.
He travelled home to remind himself of where he came from.
“I think it is good to remember you’re beginnings,” he said.
It was not all familiar. though. There were new faces and new buildings but the atmosphere was still the same, he said.
He performed for the school yesterday morning and students held their breath as he strummed his guitar and sung his heart out.
“Follow your dreams and go with God,” Mr Porter told the students.
“Enjoy high school and make the most of it because it will be over before you know it.
“On the road you have no idea where it is going to take you for the next year or for the rest of your lives.”
Principal Melissa Brown swelled with pride when she saw Mr Porter captivate the group.
“It’s always lovely seeing former students do so well,” she said.
