Members of the social playing arm of the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust played a match against the Canobolas Cockatoos at Wade Park on Sunday.
The game was such a success there is talk of it becoming an annual event in Orange.
Orange’s Andrew Litchfield co-ordinated the Cockatoos and said the day went well.
“It was a really good game of cricket,” Litchfield said.
“We’re looking to do it again next year.”
Litchfield said the SCG XI made quite the first impression when they turned up at the ground.
“They’re steeped in a lot of tradition. They turned up in blazers and ties,” he explained.
The SCG XI may have looked the part but it was the Canobolas Cockatoos who came out on top.
“We got in a fair bit of trouble early on,” Litchfield said.
The Cockatoos were 5-50, but Charlie Litchfield (60 retired) and Drew Hall (56) were able to help push the side to 218.
James Dunk (2-28), John Dunk (2-19) and Mark DeBrincat (2-47) each took multiple wickets for the SCG XI.
The Cockatoos were too good at home, and were able to restrict the SCG XI to 9-184 despite Gunnedah’s Dave Hyman making 54.
Max Dodds (2-26) was the only Cockatoos bowler to take multiple wickets.
Orange’s Steve Ryan umpired the game and was able to enjoy a lighter moment with fellow Orange umpire Mark Frecklington, who lined up with the SCG XI.
“Mark Frecklington, as a first grade umpire in Orange, was set up for a first ball LBW,” Litchfield laughed.
“The ball was missing leg stump by a foot and he returned to the crease under the DRS [decision review system].
“There were a few light-hearted moments.”
The two groups are already talking about returning to Wade Park each Australia Day for the special fixture.
