Rust, shoddy interior, no gauges and no glass in the windows.

A rust bucket would be putting it nicely.

But that, though, all torn front seat and rusty boot, is the entire point.

Davis took out the most outrageous car gong at Summernats 27 with his Rat Rod - a car that looks like it’s been dragged out of a paddock - earning the praise of most of the 103,000 people in attendance at this year’s Street Machine Festival.

Originally bought in South Australia for spare parts for another car he owns, Davis and his brother decided to take it to Canberra for this year’s Summernats for “a bit of a laugh”.

“He’s a car freak too, so we threw it together over a couple of weekends, for a bit of a laugh really, we took it to the nationals and it went off a treat,” he said.

“People loved it and we ended up walking away with a trophy and it’s all over the net now.

“Everyone always wants to find something at the back of a yard that’s worth something, and this particular car, if you’re a Holden fan, is highly sought after vehicle, being a two-door and all.”

A regular at Summernats over the last 15 years, Davis said the win was unexpected.

“It’s the first car I’ve ever taken down. Being a Holden man and my brother being a Ford man, I thought he’ll take his Ford and I’ll take my old Holden ... it looks like my old Holden won out at the end of the day,” he laughed.

Benefiting from the handy work of mother nature, Davis spent roughly six weeks fine-tuning the rust look of his now award-winning Holden.

“Not much effort was put into it at all,” he joked. “Some blokes spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and I spent, to get this look, about $16.

“People loved it, obviously enough to vote it most outrageous car on show.”
