The final over of the Under 13 Select Twenty20 invitational game had everything.
The best of the best from the 14 teams playing in the Western NSW Under 13 Carnival were invited to play in the Select T20 at Wade Park on Tuesday night.
They didn’t disappoint.
Batting first, a brilliant first over run out from Illawarra and Yellow team batsman Jono Keyes put paid to any thoughts of a quick Green team start.
Coming together at 3-28, Wagga Wagga’s Harry Reynolds (18 runs from 26 balls) and ACT Blue’s Chelsea Joo-Lennox (19 from 22) steadied the ship before Penrith’s Justin Felsch bashed 16 from just 11 balls to set a defendable total of 6-88.
Shoalhaven’s Liam McPherson was the best of the Yellow bowlers, taking 2-15 from his four overs, and was ably supported by South Coast’s Harry Cooper, Wagga’s Ned Sainsbury and Northern Districts’ Henry Kirk, who each took one scalp.
In reply, Yellow was struggling at 1-7 in the fourth over of its chase before Kirk (24 from 45) and Parramatta’s Jacob Workman (15 from 17) came together, putting on 31 for the second wicket.
Kirk and Keyes (15 from 24) continued the strong work from the Yellow middle order before both batsman fell.
Mitchell’s Sam Hall (11 from 13) and Dubbo’s Daniel Duffy (7 not out off 8) took the score to 81 with one over left.
Needing just eight to win from the final six balls, the pair scraped four from the first three deliveries before Hall was run out pushing a single from the fourth ball of the over.
Next delivery a mix-up left Cooper stranded mid-pitch, run out without facing a ball.
Needing four to win from the final delivery of the innings, Sainsbury lofted one to the vacant deep long on area and took off, he and Duffy running four to secure the four-wicket win.
Orange District Junior Cricket Association president Nick Cooper said he couldn’t be happier with the result.
“Clearly the kids had a ball,” he said.
“The parents loved it as well and it was an exciting finish. That’s what it’s all about.”
