Not too many premieres or meet and greets happen here.
Here are my picks for real signed collectibles currently available directly from artists online. All you need is a credit card and a delivery address. And a lot of patience if you’re hoping that your collectible will one day become valuable.
Remember the band Live? Lightning Crashes was a pretty good song. I once saw Live live at the Metro in Sydney just before they became popular. They were my little discovery until they broke big worldwide.
I still maintain that their first album, Mental Jewellery, is underrated and truly amazing.
Lead singer Ed Kowalczyk has now gone solo and his new album The Flood and The Mercy is about to hit the stores.
For just US$20 you can pre-order a copy which comes with a one-of-a-kind photo, taken by the artist himself. It could be a shot of almost anything but it’s most importantly a limited edition of one and will be personally signed by Ed.
For an extra US$50 you could also purchase a reproduction of the hand written lyrics sheet to I Alone or Lightning Crashes, personally thumb printed, autographed and numbered by Ed.
Combined with the photo, this would be a unique framed item worthy of a place on your wall next to the print of the dogs playing pool.
George O’Dowd, otherwise known as Boy George, has had an interesting career trajectory, with some brilliant highs such as Culture Club’s seminal 80s pop album Colour by Numbers, and some embarrassing lows such as the failure on Broadway of his musical Taboo.
George is also about to hatch a new album and for only £10 you’ll get a copy of This Is What I Do and a signed art print. His website doesn’t show the print but for the price I think this deserves a small investment.
One of favourite bands ever is Madness. You might not be familiar with the name but you’ll definitely know the hits. A few bars of House of Fun, It Must Be Love or Baggy Trousers and you are sure to be saying, “Oh, I didn’t know that they did that one.”
Well-loved frontman Suggs is revered in the UK and recently completed a speaking tour in theatres.
His new autobiography That Close is currently available on pre-order personally signed by Suggs himself.
Hardcover books are already an endangered species so a signed one for £20 means it will take pride of place at the top of my Christmas wish list.
My last pick is from the 80s synthpop duo Erasure. Known for their hits A Little Respect and ...um, some other songs, they have a new Christmas album, Snow Globe, about to hit stores in time for well, Christmas.
The deluxe box set of the album will be a limited run of 3000 and includes three CDs, a festive tree bauble, desktop calendar, postcards and a Christmas card signed by Erasure members Vince Clarke and Andy Bell.
At £40, this package might be one for the fans only but if you have the dough, it is possibly worth a punt. After all, with a career spanning 28 years, Erasure might be due another hit single soon.
