PICNIC goers and barbecue-lovers are able to enjoy the warm weather longer than they may think, with Orange City Council confirming that Cook Park and Lake Canobolas can be accessed by the public until dark.
Orange City Council city presentation manager Nigel Hobden said the gates at Cook Park were not locked by rangers until about 9.30pm, with signs on the gates stating the opening hours are 7.30am to dusk.
“This is an appropriate time for members of the public to have exited the park,” he said.
The gates at Lake Canobolas list the closing time as 8pm.
Mr Hobden says this is the time the caretaker undertakes a tour around the lake advising patrons that the gates will be closed in 20 to 30 minutes time.
“Thereby all members of the public will have exited the lake by about 8.30pm, again at the end of the twilight period, which is suitable from a public risk management perspective, as there is limited artificial lighting within the reserve,” he said.
“With the kiosk operating patrons can still be present until 11pm.”
