WITH Christmas out of the way for another year and new year celebrations just beginning, golfers take to the Country Club tomorrow to play an individual stroke with ladies welcome to take part.
Last week saw the men and ladies team-up to contest the patron's trophy, which was also the mixed Christmas cheer day.
Played as a mixed four ball best ball stableford, the competition saw Keith Longmore and Yoka Smith score 52 points to win the trophy on a countback from Victor and Pearl Twiss, but the scorers were scratching their heads over an eight-way countback before finally declaring Les Simmonds and Di Mackenzie the third placegetters on 49 points.
Several men were without partners for the patron's trophy and played an individual stableford that saw Tom Leonard switch from bowling greens to golf greens with great aplomb, taking the first prize with 39 points just ahead of John Caughlan with 38.
Dean Speechley earned himself the eagle's nest and this week's bragging rights after holing out from 150 metres to score a two on the treacherous 17th hole, which normally sees a number of golfers taking "accidental pot shots” at the cars on Forest Road.
In the ladies' drive and pitch stakes, Helen Isbester holed her chip to win the prize on the eighth hole and while the other drive and pitch holes for the ladies didn't see any chip-ins they were all within just a few centimetres of the achievement with Jane Barwick winning the fourth hole, Yoka Smith the seventh, and Doreen Carr the 10th.
The A grade long drive on the third hole went to Bruce Isbester, with Joe Werner grabbing the B grade and Warner Meredith the C grade while Tony Wilson picked up the A grade nearest the pin on the fourth Bluey Walker, the B grade on the 16th and George Gartrell the C grade on the 11th.
Warwick McLauchlan went close to an eagle on his way to winning the A grade drive and pitch on the 14th while Frank O'Regan snared the B grade, also on 14, and Warner Meredith won his second golf ball for the day with the C grade drive and pitch on the fifth.
