KIM Rickards has been appointed as the new president of the Central West Rugby Union.
Rickards’ appointment comes at a good time for the CWRU, after previous president Barry Ruddy left the post late last year due work and family commitments.
Previously associated with Orange City and the CWRU judiciary, Rickards takes on the role of president with a view to improving the already solid foundation left to him by his predecessor.
“I have been fortunate enough to step into the role after a very capable president, Barry Ruddy,” Rickards said.
“I have big shoes to fill. I have a good executive to work with and hope that we can continue on the good work already put into place.”
The newly-elected president has known of his appointment for the past two months and is expecting a bumper season after taking an interest in the competition over the last few years.
“There are a few changes to the union this year,” he said.
“The second grade competition is growing and the Blowes Menswear Cup has a familiar look about it.
“It would be good for the Blue Bulls to do well, too. They have some class players, so a good result is not an unrealistic expectation. It shapes up as a pretty exciting season.”
Along with success on the field, Rickards is hopeful the CWRU, along with its clubs, will be put into a position to thrive for a long time to come.
“I hope to build the union financially,” he said.
“We are fortunate to have a well-administrated competition and an excellent referees’ association. The new draw will ensure the competition runs smoothly.
“We don’t just want to stand still.”
With a final message to everyone involved in the CWRU, president Rickards hopes he can lead by example.
“If everyone remembers that we are here for rugby union, that’s the main thing, then we can respect our opponents and respect rugby union,” Rickards said.
