Ms Rimmer’s fifth novel, Before I let you go, will be released on February 27.
“It’s a dream come true, I’ve wanted to see my books in stores here forever, so it’s amazing,” she said.
The novel, is based on two sisters, the opioid crisis in the US and a child endangerment law in Alabama that can see women jailed if they test positive to drugs while pregnant.
Ms Rimmer said according to the law women can attend drug rehabilitation or go to jail for terms ranging from one year to 99 years according to how much harm is done to the baby.
“[There’s] only one rehabilitation centre in Alabama that can take women who are pregnant or postpartum and it costs thousands of dollars,” she said.
“It deters women from accessing medical help.”
It is the only one of her books that’s not set in Australia but Ms Rimmer said the internet made research and basing a story in the USA easier.
Ms Rimmer will launch, Before I let you go, at Orange City Library on March 1 from 5.30pm.
The author talk is free to attend but bookings are required, to RSVP contact the library on 6393 8120.
