The win for Our Uncle Sam ($1.30 favourite) in the Cordina Chicken Farms Pace (1,609 metres) was the second most lucrative in the gelding’s career, only behind a victory during his two-year-old Victoria Breeders Series campaign.
Under guidance of Anthony Frisby Our Uncle Sam got to the lead on the opening turn of Saturday’s race and never looked headed.
Lockton Luck ($21.30) put in a spirited challenge for trainer Josh Turnbull and ever-dangerous Kiwi raider Whittaker ($5.90) also wasn’t far away at the finish.
However they weren’t catching a fired up Our Uncle Sam. who ran a final quarter of 26.3 to win by 5.3m.
Our Uncle Sam now sits just shy of the six-figure mark in career prizemoney.
The winning driver said his gelding isn’t doing much wrong since returning to the track last month.
“I only had to yell at him and he knew what he had to do,” Frisby said.
“He got home in 26.3, a very quick sectional. I did get him an easy quarter but even if I didn’t I think he still would have finished it off strong.
“He’d had three tough runs prior to this so we didn’t want to work him too hard. He’s just been superb for us, the little fella.
“I thought Josh’s horse had the run of the race. He’d come across from barrier 10 and crossed over at the start. Then at the end he was right there with me.
“Whittaker was right there too. I thought all the first three horses had really good runs.”
The winning mile rate was 1:53.7.
Saturday’s results takes Our Uncle Sam’s overall Menangle record to four wins from five starts.
The only time he missed out was by a half head to Gold Chalice winner Atomic Red.
Frisby said his Sportswriter gelding has the potential to be the best ever in the family’s stable.
“Dinki Di was a star who could run sectionals of 28, 28, 28 and 28. This guy’s got the high speed though. He can do whatever you want him to do. It doesn’t matter what the race conditions are,” he said.
“Our Uncle Lyle was another great horse for us but this guy could be the best we’ve ever had. No matter where you put him in a race he always seems to be able to do whatever you want.”
The campaign is only just getting warmed up for the Bathurst father-son duo and their star runner.
They now have their sights set on a Hondo Grattan Stakes run with Our Uncle Sam, in what would be his biggest career test since last July’s Group 2 Queensland Derby.
